It's no circus for the animals:
"Sadie and Elsie were the youngest of the eight, and were very timid. One day, when we had them in the ring barn urging them through one of their tricks, Sadie just could not grasp what we were trying to show her. In frustration she attempted to run of the ring. We brought her back and began to punish her for being so stupid. We stopped suddenly, and looked at each other, unable to speak. We were seeing something I've never experienced before or since. Sadie was crying like a human being. She lay there on her side, the tears streaming down her face and sobs racking her huge body...." From "Elephant Tramp," a book by George Lewis

"She was a beautiful, sweet vegetarian brown bear who wouldn't hurt anyone... but sometimes she didn't want to perform. So they beat her with metal rods until she was screaming and bloody. She became so neurotic that she'd beat her head against the cage. That finally killed her." Former Ringling Brothers Circus employee, Eugene Pigeon, as interviewed by Animal Emancipation League
Eugene Pigeon told of monkeys kicked and hit in the face with riding crops and of chained elephants that were beaten with axe handles and pointed hooks. Often these majestic creatures were grabbed with sharp instruments by their trunk, mouths, ears (often torn and tattered by such callous handling) and hind legs, and left to neurotically sway and rock in stereotypic fashion for hours on end. The latter condition, known as "elephant autism" is comparable to a nervous breakdown in humans. Some experts theorize that the recent high-profile cases whereby elephants have attacked and killed people is a direct result of years of such abuse. Pigeon also told of horses denied exercise, whipped behind the ears and on their noses, and at times driven into frenzies; he witnessed llamas and camels bleeding from welts on their legs.
